A Festival of Social Science event
2 languages = 2 brains, 2 minds and 2 cultures?
Today most children in the world are bilingual meaning everyday they have to use more than one language to differing degrees. In London schools and other major cities classrooms are increasingly multilingual.
In our research into deaf children's language, cognitive and social development we see bilingualism (in signed and spoken language) as offering the best outcomes for deaf children. But what exactly is bilingualism? Does it mean children have two brains, two minds and two cultures?
In this festival of social science event hosted by DCAL and funded by the Economic and Social Science Research council, a group of experts from universities and special educational services will discuss research and practice.
We hope you can attend to hear what they have to say and tell us about your experiences. The event is aimed at parents, researchers, teachers and other professionals working with both deaf and hearing children where issues of bilingualism are important.
